“Well, I’ve wrestled with reality for 35 years, doctor, and I’m gay to status I finally won out over it.” That delighted comment sets the tone for “Harvey,” a movie about a lovable guy whose plot of dealing with the harshness of reality is simple: Produce his beget.

Veta Louise Simmons (Josephine Hull) hopes to arrange a fabulous marriage for daughter Myrtle May (Victoria Horne) in the upper echelons of society. There’s one problem: her wealthy brother Elwood P. Dowd (James Stewart) has an imaginary pal, a six-foot-three rabbit called Harvey. After Elwood accidently wrecks a party by introducing Harvey to everyone, Veta decides to have him committed.
Unfortunately, when Veta takes Elwood to the sanatorium, the staff advance to judge that the fluttery socialite is crazy, and is trying to glean her sunny brother out of the draw. So they lock her up, and let him go. After that mistake is straightened out, the psychiatric staff and Elwood’s long-suffering family try to gather him…. and Harvey.

If we ever saw Elwood P. Dowd (“Here, let me give you one of my cards”) in a car, the bumper sticker would probably say, “Reality is highly overrated.” The huge theme of the movie is that reality can be harsh, and that it’s not necessarily a terrible thing to lapse out of it into the fantasies of our gain minds. If Elwood isn’t hazardous and is otherwise normal, who cares if he has an imaginary friend?
Is Harvey true? The film leaves that up to our imaginations. And in the destroy, it doesn’t matter if Harvey is a figment of Elwood’s imagination, or a top-notch spirit. It’s the enact he has on Elwood that is necessary. His presence makes Elwood delighted and relaxed, and Elwood makes others ecstatic and relaxed — even the hard-boiled head of the psychiatric ward, who lies down on his hold couch and tells his secrets to Elwood.
This actually isn’t too screwballish a comedy — definite, there’s the running joke where Elwood politely introduces Harvey to people he meets. And the scene where Veta is committed is hilarious. But it’s more of a heartwarmer than a comedy, from Elwood softening the lead shrink to Myrtle May finding cherish with a lovable blue-collar worker from the sanatorium.
James Stewart gives a wonderfully dreamy performance, slightly smelling of booze and flowers — his Elwood P. Dowd is mild-mannered, sweet, intrepid, courteous, and oh-so-pleasant. And he’s learned the value of impartial enjoying the itsy-bitsy things in life, like a flower, a beer or a talk with a friend. And Josephine Hull brings up a vivid performance as his frazzled sister, with several other helpful actors rounding off the supporting cast.
Who is crazier — the overjoyed man with the imaginary rabbit, or the people who want him to be 100% sane and less cheerful? You compose the call. With a sweet, surreal epic and a flawless cast “Harvey” is one of those rare movies that does an unspecifiable number on your heartstrings.
Elwood P. Dowd is elated to piece a drink with anybody he meets, and he likes to give them his card and invite them to have dinner at his home. His charm is disarming. People will deliver their troubles over a drink, he says. Then he introduces them to his friend, Harvey, and Harvey is sooo remarkable bigger than anything they’ve got… Harvey is an invisible (usually), six-foot huge white rabbit. Harvey is also too immense for Elwood’s society-conscious sister, Veta, and her unattached daughter, Myrtle Mae, to cope with. Veta makes a mistake, however, when she tries to procure Elwood committed to a sanatorium.

Jimmy Stewart is ample as Elwood P. Dowd, but Josephine Hull steals the present as his totally flustered sister. She is, quite simply, at her wits’ demolish. This is one of only two movies that I know of that feature Hull (the other is “Arsenic and Worn Lace”) . Both are personal favorites, and Hull is friendly in both. The rest of the cast is also outstanding in this adaptation from a classic Broadway play. Many moments are hilarious, some are touching, and it all adds up to a terrific movie. This witty romp will be welcome in almost anyone’s video library.

Rattle & Hum is a documterary of U2’s 1987 tour of America. Director Phil Joanou follows the band to Novel York, Texas, Memphis, San Francisco, Denver and Arizona. The movie is shot in shadowy and white for the most allotment until the waste when a couple of concert sequences appear in color. The intelligent difference is startling and gives the film an added power. One of the more poignant scenes is the band’s visit to Graceland and Sun Studios as the visit the cradle of rock ‘n’ roll. For four guys from Dublin, Ireland this visit is like a visit to the Holy Land and it is treated with justifiable reverence. While the interviews and seek at the slow the scenes are nice, the meat of any rock film are the live performances and U2 does not disappoint. Their performance of “I Composed Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” with a Harlem choir in a church is uplifting. The do a gut wrenching purchase on “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and haunting version of “With Or Without You”. They practically explode off the cover with the rampaging “Bullet The Blue Sky”. Rattle & Hum is a must for any U2 fan and now that fourteen years have past and the band has changed its image and examine a couple of times, it is bright to glimpse at them in a simpler time.
I have always loved U2’s “Rattle and Hum”, both the movie, and the acompanying soundtrack album. Both managed to net U2 at what I reflect to be the height of their artistic powers. Now that this film has approach to DVD, I now luxuriate in it even more! The sound and portray quality is honorable – in fact you should listen to it through a proper status of headphones if you can! While some have complained about the “grainy” shaded and white photography that dominates most of the movie, I rep that it really sets a mood and adds a fresh dimension – a song like the sunless and imposing “Exit” impartial would not be same filmed with incandescent colors and flashing lights! The interview segments are nice, especially when we procure to hear drummer Larry Mullen Jr. jabber about his hero Elvis, but it is the music that is the rightful focus of the movie. Songs from “The Joshua Tree” are heavily featured, including an emotional version of “Running To Stand Level-headed” that surpasses the studio recording. Ditto for the aforementioned version of “Exit”…Wow! Other highlights include the “Angel of Harlem” recording sessions at Sun Studios, a live performance of the anti-aparthied anthem “Silver and Gold”, a powerhouse version of “Desire” taken from the tour rehersals, a dismal and menacing concert version of “Bullet the Blue Sky”, and an emotional re-working of “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, which is perhaps the esential version of that song! Bono is an bright presence throughout the film, and it is distinct that he really poured his heart and soul into these performances. (I really wish that Bono would hold himself this “seriously” again, rather than performing that “rock star parody” character that he has taken to in unusual years) If you esteem the music of U2, then impartial ignore the critics and choose this movie! Those narrow-minded critics simply didn’t understand the premise of this film, or the band who inspired it! “Rattle & Hum” is the record of four guys who loved rock-n-roll so noteworthy that the dedicated their entire lives to it…it’s a simple as that!
