There are several anime that I love, including Evangelion, .hack//SIGN, Excel Saga, RahXephon, Infinite Ryvius, and Last Exile. And then there’s Pioneer/Geneon’s R.O.D: The TV, one of the most stylish and titillating of them all.
First of all, most newcomers will want to stare the movie R.O.D: Read or Die (released in North America by Manga Entertainment) before tackling the TV series, as it provides some back-story to the 26-episode prove. R.O.D: The TV focuses on Nenene Sumiregawa, a noted author and terminate friend of secret agent Yomiko Readman, who has gone missing since the events of the movie. Nenene has recently become the target of terrorist threats, and her publisher has hired the Three Paper Sisters Detective Agency to relieve as her bodyguards.

Like Yomiko, the Sisters are Paper Masters, which means that they can manipulate simple paper into razor-sharp weapons, fierce beastlike creatures, and even giant paper airplanes that can flee through the sky. They are Michelle Chan (a bubbly blonde who has a soft site for books and limited children), Maggie Mui (a strong, mute, and emotional bibliophile), and Anita King (a loud, changeable adolescent who hates books but loves milk and stuffed animals) . They are also assigned to locate a series of legendary books that the British Library also is taking a unusual interest in.
Joseph “Joker” Carpenter is wait on as the devious, suave leader of the British Library, as is his assistant Wendy (no longer the bumbling secretary of the movie but a hardened, serious businesswoman) . U.S. agent Drake Anderson, Yomiko, and Nancy Makuhari also reappear as major characters before too long. Some of the novel characters include Junior (a stupefied young agent of the British Library who shares Nancy’s ability to “phase” through solid matter) and Sonny Wong, a member of Asian publisher Dokusensha who is an extremely great Paper Master in his occupy correct.
Unlike several shows, R.O.D: The TV takes the time to effect its main characters without neglecting the region at hand. When it’s providing some exposition to characters like Junior, Anita’s friend Hisami, and the Paper Sisters themselves, it hits the legal emotional notes and makes the cast human and possible to record to. When it delves into the underlying storyline, dramatic scenes and fights, it accomplishes them with aplomb. The battles are well-animated and choreographed and showcase the Sisters’ powers with astronomical amounts of style. We steadily learn of the importance of the secret books without being handed too noteworthy at once.
There are some occasional feeble parts, such as one bizarre episode in which the Sisters go through a town with a space of conspiracies against them. But this is otherwise an engaging display to experience, and to me, it was worth every penny.
Creativity this series scores the highest possible gain, but characters and DVD extras? Forget about it.
Simply one of the best series on television, R.O.D. the TV delivers in character originality, character depth, agreeable shriek acting, memorable scenes, awesome action sequences, enough deep thinking to compose adults savor this series, and happens to be downright creative in almost every design!
It should be distinguished that this series is mistakenly called “Read or Die the TV” which it is not, it is “R.O.D. the TV” a bolt off from the fresh series which started the OVA Read or Die which ended up branching off both this series for the American audience and Read or Dream, a manga series (a fresh series I hear is in the works as I write this. This is an considerable distinction to acquire because the sage arc which this series follows is extremely different from the new Read or Die novels as well as the Read or Dream mangas.
So what can you quiz with R.O.D. the TV? State twists, librarians, book store owners, improper corporations all of which is tied together with magical powers to manipulate paper and also manages to resurrect some loveable characters from the “Read or Die” movie (the OVA for which the series was based on) . Plain animated and yet depressingly so as was the case in my notion with Witch Hunter Robin, R.O.D. the TV will have you bent in no time with some of the best character development and novel narrative seen thus far in anime!
Truly a amazing production… though I’d suggest you rent the OVA and then the first couple of DVDs before buying it to perform obvious you’ll cherish it impartial as distinguished as some of the other die hard fans out there! Trust me though, there’s a lot to like about it!

Amazon, you need a sixth star to do burly justice to this edgy, innovative masterpiece of ensemble acting. That lead actor Val Kilmer can shine so brilliantly amidst the endless stream of first rate supporting actors proves he is not only an actor of supreme ability, but a catalyst who has brought about microscopic miracles in the roles of, among others, Sarsgaard, Wong, D’Onofrio, Plummer, Unger, Guzman –well the list is long and simply mind-boggling. The film was released in only four or five major cities and dropped. How the producers of this film could have been so dense in promoting it is beyond my scope of notion. No doubt Kilmer will once again be passed over at Oscar time (remember Tombstone? The Doors? How about Heat? ) but if making great films is his sincere source of satisfaction, he should be very proud of this film. His acting depicts a range of human emotions in this film that will leave you breathless.
Do yourself a favor and recognize this movie. Often.

This 2002 film is a rather outlandish and grotesque sage place in the world of drugs. Val Kilmer is cast as a feeble trumpet player on a downward drug spiral. He’s a middleman dealer, a police informant and a run freak himself. The drug scenes are lurid and explicit. And the violence never stops. It’s also a roller coaster lope for the audience, with a complicated state that finally makes sense. There are also special effects and moments to produce me cringe.
Vincent D’Onofrio is cast as a demented drug dealer who has lost his nose due to his habit. He’s a sadist who boasts about torturing people who have tried to scam him and he puts Val Kilmer through some deplorable moments. There’s double crossing going on of course, and even triple crossing. This makes the space rather consuming as our perception of our hero changes as the film moves along.

It’s all a exclusive and awful breeze but I must give credit to comely performances and edifying and edgy directing. I enjoyed it but do end away if you’re squeamish in any design and don’t want to be terrorized by nightmarish images. Recommended only for the adventurous few.

I first stumbled onto this movie on the Romance channnel, not bright grand about the movie or the actors in it. I fell in care for with this movie and highly recommend it. I have since watched it several times and I am now a mountainous fan of Richard E. Grant. He is a truly broad actor. British film at its best!
First, I have watched this movie over several times in the residence of one week, mainly to come by the first half-hour, and to eye the expressions on the faces of the baby and Jack as they bond. And the first time I watched, I snuffled my procedure past three moments… something that I have not done for a long time in watching movies.

Secondly, I admit to renting this movie primarily because of Richard E. Grant and learning a bit about his filmography and his personal life. [For more on both, I recommend his maintain website]. However, the movie came with a savory and great bonus – obedient turns by critical actors in secondary characters Margaret (Dame Judi Dench, of “Mrs Brown”, “Elizabeth”, and the British series “As Time Goes By” fame), Philli (Dame Eileen Atkins, who co-developed the classic British series “Upstairs Downstairs”), and William (Sir Ian McKellen, of “Gods and Monsters” and “Richard III”) .
There is a small frisson in seeing Richard Grant and Ian McKellen in the same movie. Grant plays the Scarlet Pimpernel in the controversial A&E/BBC version that strays from the modern storyline. McKellen played Chauvelin in the 1982 version starring Anthony Andrews. Having unprejudiced seen both versions lent this movie an extra fillip.

Now to the merits of the film itself. It is a maudlin comedy, in that there are humorous moments but the film starts off more as a tragedy waiting to happen. And the tragedy does capture status quite soon – and Jack, a lawyer who apparently has everything, finds his life falling apart. His bonding with his infant daughter (forced upon him by his relatives) gives him a reason to go on. I found this the strongest fraction of the film, although I was somewhat upset by omission of facts (such as the manner of Sarah’s death) and some improbabilities (the apparent ease with which Jack could absent himself from his job, without being fired) .
Jack’s breakdown was however portrayed brilliantly, and in watching the beginning a fourth time, I was able to follow the stages of his despair as I had never done earlier. It may be that the accents are slightly irregular to me, but multiple viewings allowed me to choose up first this, and then that – only going to showcase the talents of Grant and the supporting actors.
Having bestowed all this praise (and ooohed and aahed over the cute dinky baby, or baby actors playing the baby), I must say that I was somewhat less convinced over the admire affair. I won’t go into details for fearing of spoiling the film for you. A microscopic personal history for Amy (the nanny) would have helped. All we learn is that she is an American in London, that she knows nothing about child care, and we also learn a exiguous bit about a past relationship.
Keeper status: Very likely, but not positive. You really have to like this kind of film, or fair care for British film actors. I savor Dench and Grant, but I am not obvious I want to add this film to my video collection.
Re-viewing status: Very likely. This film is definitely worth watching again.
This review was originally written June 25, 2001 and edited slightly on October 24, 2004.
Corrections (made 24 Oct 2004) : Dame Eileen Atkins did not play Rose in Upstairs, Downstairs (that role was played by Jean Marsh), and I have edited that accordingly. [My apologies to both actresses, and my thanks to Karen who wrote in]. I also placed the film and series names within inverted commas, and clarified which titles were series.

I’ve always loved Branagh. From the moment he made film history with HENRY V (by being the first person since Orson Welles to find Oscar nominations for both actor and director for the same film) to the light touch he brough to his explain acting in the attractive ROAD TO EL DORADO, he has always been a popular.
But–a film musical based on one of Shakespeare’s least-important works? Residence in the gradual 1930’s no less? Sounds almost as terrible an understanding as MOULIN ROUGE. Intrigued, we rented the film from Netflix.
AND FELL IN Adore. Who cares about the chop-job he did on the “sacred” text? Who cares about the lack of screech in some of his singers? What we watched was a film that made us smile from the opening credits all the method through the final act.
Set aside your preconceptions about what a Shakespeare film should be. Situation aside your ideas about what a musical should watch like. Bask In the fun of the film, the glamour of its costuming, its very likable cast. When most movies try to be either extravaganzas or “serious,” it’s nice to have Mr. Branagh and company give us something that does exactly what it sets out to do: give you a very excellent entertainment.

This film was not widely released, but being an avid Branagh fan I made a prance to go watch it, hoping it would become a accepted like his earlier film, Powerful Ado About Nothing. Alas, this was not the case. Although very cute, I felt like I was watching a high school drama production -mind you, a very obliging one- but I didn’t mediate it was as up to par as some of his earlier films. The movie definitely does have a feeling of a MGM musical (I assume that’s what they were going for) and the songs are customary favorites by Cole Porter, the Gershwins, and Irving Berlin. Amazingly enough, the actors recount, and quite well. Adrian Lester (previously seen in Indispensable Colors) has a broad hiss and was the best dancer in the cast. At times I felt that Alicia Silverstone (The Princess) seemed a small too southern California for Shakespeare, but even she began to grow on me during the movie.
Love’s Labour’s Lost is one of the Bard’s lesser known plays and is very easy to understand. Although I seemed to rip on the movie, I truly did like it. It’s a light comedy, and even though it’s Shakespeare, it won’t have you scambling for your Cliffs Notes. A must gape for fans of the Bard and musical lovers alike!
