This review refers to the VHS edition …..
Passe age and all the problems that go with it, have turned Norman Thayer(Henry Fonda) into a curmudgeon. He is forgetful and thoughts of dieing are foremost in his mind. It doesn’t seem to bother his wife Ethel distinguished though(Katherine Hepburn) .Always in high spirits and jubilant to be alive. Her biggest woe is worrying about him. The Thayers are spending their 48th year at their summer home On Golden Pond. It will be Norman’s 80th birthday, and joining in the celebration will be their daughter Chelsea(Jane Fonda), who Norman has never been able to connect with emotionally.

Chelsea brings with her to the lake her fiance(Dabney Coleman) and his 13 year mature son Billy(Doug McKeon) who has some emotional problems of his maintain. Billy is left to expend the summer with the older couple, which was not what the 13 year veteran had in mind for a fun vacation.Norman and Billy invent an unusal bond over the summer as Ethel watches her husband’s renewed zest for life.
The film is one of those that the expression “I laughed. I cried” really is accurate. The account is an emotional rollercoaster, that you’ll want to sight over and over.Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn shine and both recieved best Acting awards in 1981 for their on shroud magic. All I could seek in the scenes with Henry and Jane together was savor. Even when their characters were at odds they too loved each other, and managed to work through it.An improbable acting job by the young Doug McKeon, and Coleman respectable as he goes toe to toe with Henry Fonda.
The music and the scenery are as blooming as the movie. The pond with the sun shimmering, the woodsy areas, the loons ever demonstrate, were a joy to peek. Directed by Effect Rydell, who seemed to gather the beauty of life. Fonda’s last film, he left us with one that we can like for years to approach.

I’ve seen On Golden Pond at least thirty times since its release and never procure tired of it. Henry Fonda is intellectual as the crabby Norman Thayer and he shines in his last mask performance. His interplay with Katharine Hepburn reminds one of the rare chemistry she enjoyed with Spencer Tracy in all the magical movies they made together. Everything Fonda says in this movie is dependable and believable, you’ll never gain him overacting or playing one erroneous ticket. It would be difficult to imagine anyone else in this role.

Fonda’s scenes with daughter Jane are particularly bright considering their strained loyal life relationship. Their last embrace at the conclusion of the film will tug at your heart strings. It’s a poignant and wistful leer at growing old-fashioned and facing death, two terrible but unavoidable subjects. Fonda and Hepburn are literally perfect in this film, which is also enhanced by a resplendent, haunting soundtrack. This is a film you can see again and again and never weary of it.

I have watched only 3 of 10 seasons so far & have 5 disc that skip/freeze during playback. After problems with first couple of discs, I inspected the entire region & found at least 15 discs that are dirty, scratched over entire surface or deeply pitted. This did not happen during shipping- they came from the Factory like this. Definitely not something you ask to come by in Unique DVDs. So please spy your area ASAP before time runs out to seek information from a replacement/refund from Amazon. I have requested a replacement today and hopefully this station will be in wonderful condition.
Stargate SG-1 is awesome, unfortunately the quality of this situation is horrifying! It was received with many of the DVD’s damaged (scratched, dirty, pitted) but due to the size of the state I did not collect the first, of many, DVD’s that are damaged until after the Return period had expired. The packaging of the place is fair awful, there is no protection for the DVD’s, it is impartial cardboard holders. If you do catch this item, develop distinct you check every single DVD immediately.

As a fan of Asian cinema, I’ve often wondered why I haven’t reviewed more Japanese anime. Stale anime has very complex storylines that can attach most movies to shame. “VEXILLE” (a.k.a. Vexille 2077 Nihon Sakaku, Isolation) is from the same folks responsible for Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C.. Director Fumihiko Sori and writer Haruka Handa’s latest is a blend of venerable 2 dimensional animation and 3-D effects that gives us a vision of a futuristic world. People who saw Appleseed may sight the similarities to Masamune Shirow’s futuristic designs since they both worked on the 2004 hit spellbinding film.

The anecdote in “Vexille” begins as Daiwa Industries leads Japan in technological advancements as an attempt for Imperial Aspirations (recalls Japan in WWII) . Daiwa began experimenting in rude cloning, bio-engineering human tissue to combine with machine parts. Aroused with these experiments, the U.N. orders Japan to end all activities. In retaliation, Japan sanctions a rule of total isolation from the rest of the world, and the country even goes as far as generating a magnetic force field around its borders.
After 10 years, American intelligence intercepts information that Japan has developed a plan that can turn humans into cyborgs. A sad ops group called “S.W.O.R.D.” is sent to infiltrate isolated Japan to glean the truth of this matter and end it if indispensable. Vexille, one of the commando units sent to Japan soon finds herself the lone survivor who may be able to terminate Daiwa with its ghastly plans. She hooks up with Maria and her gang of renegades to infiltrate Daiwa. But is Maria more than what she seems? The repugnant secret may be more than they bargained for….
I’ve read that “Vexille” wasn’t such a big hit when it came out in Japan. Perhaps, anime fans experienced some “cyberpunk” overload because there are quite a lot of features that explain a futuristic world with “mechas” involved; or maybe because the status in “Vexille” portrays the country as a “rogue” government in the world’s eyes. I wouldn’t know the legal reason. But this modern work by Sori and Handa seemed too similar to Shirow’s past works. It incorporates familiar themes of the usual corporate entity that wants to play God, a strong-willed, gutsy but lovely heroine, futuristic military weaponry and the premise of man vs. machine or the morality of man and machine. The film may actually be homage to Masamune Shirow.

The animation in “Vexille” is kind of a mixed bag. I loved the fact that the characters don’t have the usual over-expressive “bulging” eyes, outlandish colored hair and perfect complexion. Vexille and Maria (as well the entire supporting cast) looked almost realistic in their features, it sidestepped the usual anime conventions that we’re primitive to in the past. Their movements are also very fluid and still that outshines the motion win in “Beowulf” but comes a lot short of the quality of the amazing animation in “Final Fantasy: Advent Children”. I also found it a bit funny that Americans looked like they’re mixed and mild looked a tad Asian. (Not complaining, fair stating an observation) Also, I saw this film in its fresh Japanese language; snort actors Yasuko Matsuyuri as sexy rebel, Maria (This character makes me want to become a cartoon) and Meisa Kuroki as Vexille do a very decent job in expressing emotions.
The film totally looks bewitching with the execution of CGI and frail cell animation. The effects work by Oxybot is perfect for this type of movie. “Vexille” seems to borrow elements from Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner and even Dune. (You’ll be impressed once you gape the “Jags”) The one fault that the film has, that somewhat lost its effectiveness is the lack of dramatic impact. The tale is deep enough to maintain experienced viewers alive to but the execution seemed a bit lackluster. It opted to determine for the usual histrionics and missed a fabulous opportunity for emotional verbalize by exploring the dramatic repercussions of the film’s main premise. Graphics can only carry an exciting feature so far.
Overall, I did like “Vexille” more than I did “Appleseed Ex Machina”. I guess I’m so archaic to Anime with all the dramatic elements explored that I was somewhat disappointed. The film had all the dynamic potential with its deep premise that wasn’t fully realized.
Recommended! For Japanese Anime or Sci-Fi films FANS! [3 ½ Stars]
After reading a short synopsis and the Japanese version trailer of this movie (when looking for something to go spy one evening), I figured I’d check it out. I’m not a spacious fan of a lot of Japanese anime, though some of it is frigid, and I’m not normally a vast fan of sharp drama/action in general, but WOW was Vexille a marvelous surprise! If I had to compare it to something, I would say it’s Final Fantasy meets Titan A.E. and maybe a runt bit of the Matrix.
The animation style was fair attractive! The mix of cartoon with computer-generated animation was a shiny glimpse to peek. The scenes in this movie had wonderful dimension, color, style, and a totally mesmerizing quality. It definitely made it very easy to earn myself drawn into this futuristic world.
The chronicle is spacious too! Expedient character development and a sci-fi element that is at least partially believable (and certainly, if nothing else, bright) . Site in the year 2077, the technology is slick, clever, and icy – yet not so far fetched that you can’t imagine the possibilities suggested. Unplug and acquire into the fantasy and you’ll have a big time. The movie has a bit of a Matrix quality in that (aside from its certain political elements) there is the strong sense of an underlying (almost spiritual) theme driving the memoir but it’s unprejudiced far enough removed from the surface anecdote that you can dig for messages if you want to or unbiased appreciate the walk without getting into the philosophy of the film. I like movies that have multi-faceted elements like this. It made me want to scrutinize it again to try and method more out of it.
In short, the movie is large! It’s more of a drama than out and out action (so it might strike some viewers as a slight slow-paced in places), but the action is fun and the fable is splendid. The characters are such that you care about them and that draws you even further into the sage. There is also some cold music in the film, well placed with the various scenes and novel enough so that it doesn’t strike as typical. My popular songs are “Target Practice” by Asian Dub Foundation, “Bird Flu” by M.I.A. and “The Virus” by Paul Oakenfold. Again, the artwork and C.G. effects are elegant and really fun to peruse.
I loved the movie and would stare it again (and will) because I’m ordering it today! Parents who are exciting about the teach will be elated to know that there are no sexual themes in this film. There is a light sub context of a admire yarn indicate, but it’s not the main focus of the film. There is sci-fi action and violence but nothing bloody or grotesque. There is a limited bit of language, thus earning it its PG-13 rating.
If you like anime or fair suited sci-fi, both elements should please. I recommend it.
