Gurren Lagann is one of the best anime shows I have seen in a while. It goes procedure over the top and enjoys doing it. It is a indicate that unapologetically pushes the boundaries of absurdity, and makes it seem not so absurd.

This DVD will have the English Dub tracks, as well as the modern Japanese tracks. If you only want the Japanese version, go to the store accurate now, Gurren Lagann Volumes 1-3 Subtitles only is on the shelves for only $20 a disc, nine episodes per disc. This looks to be a more outmoded anime DVD release. $60 Special Edition, $35 regular edition, you’re looking at two discs covering the first eight episodes or so. The Drill LED looks to be exquisite chilly and the box art also seems stylish. This should be a beautiful valid release.

That’s about $18 per four episodes of Dubbed versions, as opposed to $20 for nine episodes of the Sub only version. Shop wisely!

Only other time I payed this considerable for anime was FLCL (6 episodes, 80 bucks)

Now I’ve payed 70 for the first 9 episodes of Gurren Lagann, having bought the first, sub-only release, and now rebuying for this. But I’m not buying the novel releases for the dub. I’m buying them for three reasons. First, I wanted the artbox. It opens by lifting the top side, which open’s the Gurren’s mouth. The second is the special features. The first releases only had the display, nothing more, and while the features on this are unexcited elegant light, they’re better than nothing. Finally, the Core Drill. While not as nice looking as the drill that comes with the Revoltech figure (it’s a Diminutive stubby), it evens out in the fact that when you flip a switch, the golden drill glows green with spiral energy. Now, I can go out in public, flip the switch, point into the air and bellow “MINE IS THE DRILL THAT SHALL PIERCE THE HEAVENS! ORE O DARE DATTO OMOTE YAGERU? “

I fair finished watching the third season DVD residence, and while Stargate Atlantis is composed my popular Sci-Fi present, I was rather disapointed.

Here’s why.

(Warning! Spoilers below!)

First, myth arc failure. I was expecting a stout advancement in the myth arc concerning the Wraith, but it unbiased didn’t happen. Distinct, they appear in a few proper episodes, but it didn’t seem like the yarn with respect to them in particular moved at all.

Second, killing off Dr. Beckett. I really liked him. Maybe I’m dating myself a bit here, but he was kind of like Scotty and McCoy rolled together but with a cooler head. This very lovable character will be missed.

Third, rehashing the replicators. With an entirely unusual galaxy as our backdrop for this series, why do the replicator thing all over again? It was fresh enough on Stargate SG-1, but I was amazed that Atlantis started a account arc with replicators too. Are they going creatively bankrupt already?

Fourth, rehashing worn sci-fi standbys, like the “irregular alien thingy or disease that causes right comrades to initiate killing each other”. Did the modern Star Hobble do this in the episode “The Naked Time” and wasn’t it done again by Star Chase Next Generation as the second or third episode in that series?

Fifth, bringing assist a whole ship stout of “ancients” objective to raze them all off by the raze of the two fragment episode. So, the “ancients” have gone from being a tall and mysterious speed of humanoids from the past to an expediant dwelling diagram. We can accomplish them and slay them at will honest to derive and episode or two. Couldn’t an “extinct” or two have been spared and passe as secondary characters? Wouldn’t that have been absorbing? They could have helped perceive the rest of the city. Their ship could have been recovered. There’s so great that could have been done with them that wasn’t.

Sixth, lack of character development. Tayla could be a full-fledged warrior princess with a rich heritage and tons of wisdom, but she seems shrimp more than a delicate (to say the least) face with a huge body who never uses contractions (reminds me of Barbara Eden in I Dream of Jeanie) and tilts her head a lot. And then there’s Ronan the Monotone Macho man who does nothing for me but must appeal to a clear demographic so he’s serene there.

Still, the season ended with a special effects spectacular and a tightly written script that showed unprejudiced what the Atlantis team is good of. And, of course there’s the wealth of special features and commentaries that you gather as share of the standard package with Stargate franchise DVD sets, and that greatly adds to the value of the state.

I haven’t seen any of season four. Here’s hoping.

For my money, the third season of Stargate Atlantis is the best thus far. All of the seasons have been somewhat hit-and-miss, in terms of episode quality, but I mediate season three brings a wealth of much-needed character development. We learn more about the mysterious Sheppard in “Phantoms” and the taciturn Ronon Dex in “Sateda,” while the episodes “McKay and Mrs. Miller” and “The Tao of Rodney” provide recent dimensions to the bright and blustery Rodney McKay. McKay’s character arc alone — looking from his modern guest appearances years ago on SG-1 to the newest Atlantis offerings — is staggering, and David Hewlett greatly deserves the praise he’s received for his performance. Outside of something like Firefly, I mediate it’s rare to gaze a explain in this genre notice so considerable of the characters’ backstories, and it’s gratifying to witness it finally happening for SGA.

Teyla is certainly underutilized, and I hope that this season will bring unusual depths to her character. From what I’ve heard, there is definitely the opportunity for that to happen.
